Red: Un Manga Haida is the French version of the ground-breaking title Red, A Haida Manga, written and illustrated by Haida artist and activist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas. This book was translated from English by Marc Founier. Combining the art styles of Haida carvers and the graphic aspects of Japanese manga, Yahgulanaas creates a captivating and innovative graphic novel that retells a Haida narrative for a contemporary audience. The main character is Red, an orphan, who experiences tragic loss when his sister Jaada is kidnapped from their village. The boy seethes with rage and revenge grips his soul. When Red becomes a leader he acts on his rage and leads his village into war and near destruction. Red locates his sister and learns that war and revenge is not the answer for loss and grief. The book consists of 108 pages of hand-painted illustrations. Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas (1954- ) is from Delkatla in Masset on Haida Gwaii and has exhibited in Japan, Korea, England, and Canada. He is a descendant of Charles Edenshaw and a relative of Robert Davidson. This book is a work of art and should be a popular graphic novel for senior elementary and secondary students. Highly recommended. Reading Level: 5.
